Stephen Tuttle, USMA 1820

Cullum #232. Graduated first in his class.

"The records of the Class of 1820, our Centennial "preds," show that of the 30 members of that class, 4 were admitted to the Academy at the age of 13. Stephen Tuttle, the "daddy" of the class was under 20 when admitted and not only led the class but acted as Assistant Professor during his first class year."  [The Bulletin. Class of 1920 USMA, #9, March 1935, p.7; my second library notebook, p. 105].

"Thirty of the nation's pampered pets reached the end of Sylvanus Thayer's rock road to wisdom on July 1, 1820. Eleven of these spent six years on that road; two took the hurdles in two years. The latter while still cadets, received ten dollars per month extra for acting as Assistant Professors of mathematics! In those days a hivey cadet obtained tangible dividends rather than stars." [ibid, #15, February 1940].
