Clark Burdine, USMA 1821

Cullum #263. Graduated second in his class.

"The general examination of the Cadets of the U.S. Military Academy, closed on Thursday evening last, after a duration of 25 days, from sunrise until sunset each day." The board of visitors consisted of General Swift, "Mr. Patterson, President of the American Philosophical Society, and late Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania; Mr. Garnet, recently from England; and Mr. Renwick, formerally Professor of Mathematics in Columbia College."  Burdine is listed among the five (in the third class). This is interesting for it shows that prominent mathematicians had first hand knowledge of West Point. Try to find out if there are any recollections in their memoirs.
