David Wallace, USMA 1821

Cullum # 270.

"After graduating from West Point in 1821, David served as an instructor in mathematics at the institution. Resigning his commission on 1 June 1822 he rejoined his family in Brookville [IN] and began the study of law with Judge Miles C. Eggleston."

This quotation is from the interesting biographical piece

but Cullum [vol 1, p.269] does not mention him teaching at USMA. He writes that after Wallace graduated ninth in his class on July 1, 1821 he served on ordinance duty, July 1, 1821 until June 1, 1822 when he resigned his commission.

The truth is that he was Acting Assistant Professor of Mathematics as a Second Class Cadet, 1819-1820.

There is nothing in the USMA library catalogue by or about him.
