George S. Greene, USMA 1823.

Cullum # 327

Descended from John Greene, one of the founders of Warwick, Rhode Island. His father, Caleb Greene, was a prosperous ship owner whose business was ruined by embargo. Thus he sent his son to West Point, not Brown as intended. [Cindy Adams, Thayer Papers]. The son is Francis Vinton Green, #2312.

There are three letters in the Thayer Papers that mention Greene. All are from Thayer's younger sister Abigail Thayer (born 1791). They indicate that Greene is very anxious of getting into West Point. She has high praise for him. The letters are dated 24 May 1818, 25 July 1818, and 22 May 1819 [volume 3, pp. 45, 52, and 86; copies in folder].

Green was the roommate of Alfred Mordecai and they graduated first and second in the class of 1823.
