Died in Illinois, 16 July 1869, age 62.

Graduated at the top of his class in 1831.

• Professor, University of Pennsylvania, 1836-1842.
• President, Racine College in Wisconsin, 1852-1859.
• Chancellor, 1859-1863.

Author of A Sketch of the history and topography of West Point and the U. S. Military academy, which was published in 1840. Of this work Cullum says:

The former [i.e., this work], mostly a compilation of official documents, gave only a meager account of our great National Military School, but, being then its only history extant, was popular in its day. [in Park's Cullum entry, vol 1, p. 470]
