• Teacher of Mathematics, St. Thomas' Hall, MS, 1844-1845.
• Professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineering, University of Louisiana, 1847-1861.
• Professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineering, University of Mississippi, 1865-1884. Right after the Civil War, he was the only faculty member not in Classics.

"The Mathematics Department [at the University of Mississippi] is in charge of General C. W.. Sears, who distinguished himself in the late Confederate service, and who is a graduate of West Point and a gentleman of great personal merit and high scientific attainments."
