Alfred Sully, USMA 1841.

- Died 27 April 1879

Cadet on February 19, 1838 when the Academic Building burned. His papers describe the efforts of
the students to save the library. Pappas, p. 234, says they saved the majority of the books. The
primary damage to the books was water damage. However, I have no recollection of any water
damaged books in the current USMA collection. There are some with burns.

Sully, USMA 1841, was the son of the painter Thomas Sully (1783-1872), several of whose
paintings were saved from this fire.
