• Assistant Professor of Geography, USMA, 1866-1868.
• President, College of the City of New York, 1869-1902.
• Honorary Degree, Hobart College.

He was the second president of CCNY, succeeding Horace Webster.

The West Point Museum has his drawing album. Of interest are "The January Examination", "Col. Bell on Court Martial" (he is asleep), and "Revelry" which has two cadets frantically getting dressed.
