President of the United States having been pleased to appoint Herbert A.
Hascall a Cadet in the service of the United States, he is to be received as
such, and entitled to all the consideration attached to said appointment. This
appointment to take effect from the 30th
day of June 1852." CHARLES MAGILL CONRAD, a Whig, represented
Louisiana in the U.S. Senate (1842-1843) and the House (1848-1850).
After serving as Fillmore's Secretary of War (1850-1853), he was one
of the leaders of the secessionist movement in Louisiana in December 1860.
Conrad, a member of the 1st
and 2nd Confederate
Congress (1862-1864), served as a Brigadier
General in the Confederate Army before returning to New Orleans to resume
his practice of law. Vertical fold touches "C" in Conrad. Lightly foxed and
creased, chipped at lower right edge, folded lower right corner. Overall, fine
condition. $299.
