John Rogers Meigs, USMA 1863.

Born in Washington, D.C. Killed in action, October 3, 1864 near Harrisonburg, VA, age 22.

John R. Meigs graduated first in the class of 1863, just ahead of Peter S. Michie. This means that Meigs was a brilliant student for Michie was regarded as one of the most brilliant graduates of the Academy and served as Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy from 1871-1901.

Meigs is the son of Montgomery C. Meigs (USMA 1836, Cullum #846, born 3 May 1816 in Augusta, Georgia, died January 2, 1892 in Washington, D.C.). He is the grandson of Charles Delucena Meigs (19 February 1792 - 22 June 1869). Most interestingly, John Meigs is the great-grandson of Josiah Meigs (August 21, 1757 - September 4, 1822), who taught mathematics at Yale (1794-1801) and George Washington University (it was Columbian College when he taught there from 1819 to 1822), was the first president of the University of Georgia (1801-1822; it was then Franklin College), and
