Eric Bergland, USMA 1869

Born:    April 25, 1844 in Helsingland, Sweden.

Died:    November 3, 1918, Baltimore, MD, age 74.

• Graduated first in the class of 1869, the first Swedish-American graduate.
• Assistant Instructor of Practical Military Engineering, USMA, April 11, 1873 to May 17, 1875.
• Assistant Professor of Mathematics, USMA, August 28, 1878 to August 28, 1880.

Genealogy:

In 1878, Bergland married Lucy Scott McFarland, daughter of Mary Eppes Scott and William C. McFarland of Lexington, KY. Lucy was a cousin of Lucy Webb Hayes, wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes. The Berglands were frequent visitors to the White House while Hayes was president from 1877 to 1881.
