Archival Material on Charles Davies

The following eight items are located at Columbia University in the archives section of the Rare Book Room on the sixth floor of Butler Library. The first four were found in the manuscript catalog, the second four in the correspondence catalog.  The first paragraph is the catalog entry. Everything else is by Rickey.

1.     Davies, Charles, New York, 1830, ms. d.s. 2p. (Contract for his Elements of Surveying).

2.     Davies, Charles, New York, 1 April 1834, ms. d.s. 2p. (Contract for his Legendre's Geometry and Trigonometry, edited by Davies.)

3.     Mansfield, Edward Dearing, New York, 1 October 1834, ms. d. 1p. (Contract for his The Political Grammar of the United States; original signed by Charles Davies.)

4.    Noyes, James Atkins, Miner `78, Plates to accompany a Treatise on Shades and Shadows by Charles Davies, ms on paper. 10ff. 15 1/2 by 16 1/2 in. Columbiana ms 47.
In case these really are a manuscript rather than the plates, I should take a copy of the plates with me for comparison when I go to examine this.

5.     1863 Oct 13. Davies (Charles) to Fish (Hon. Hamilton). Columbia College Faculty. (Letter Files). Hamilton Fish Papers.

6.    1864 June 8. Davies (Charles) to Fish (Hon. Hamilton). College matters and Joy's connection with the college. (Letter Files). Hamilton Fish Papers.
This is probably the chemist Joy, Charles A. (Charles Arad), 1823-1891, who joined the faculty at the same time as Davies. See volume of inaugural addresses.

7.     1865 June 16. Davies (Charles) to Fish (Hon. Hamilton). Relative to the severing of his connection with Columbia College. (Letter Files). Hamilton Fish Papers.

8.    1865 Sept 11. Barnard (F. A. P.) to Fish (Hon. Hamilton). Prof. Davies resignation -- Prof. Nairns. (Letter Files). P. S. Pamphlet of Laws. Hamilton Fish Papers.
Nairne, Charles Murray, 1808-1882, Professor of Literature and Philosophy, was appointed at the same time as Davies.

I got this information on 7 April 2000 while in the Columbia Rare Book Room to view Plimpton 322. I need to make another trip back to look at these items, but before I do I should see which books by Davies they have that are not at USMA.
