Somers Dick

John Somers Buist Dick, 90, born June 10, 1913, in Atlanta, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, after suffering a heart attack the previous week.

He had been a resident of Weaverville since 1974.

Brigadier General Dick, a 1935 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., was a veteran of World War II. As an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, he took part in the postwar reconstruction of Japan and later served on the NATO staff in Italy. General Dick returned to West Point in 1958 as a Professor of Mathematics, later to become the Dean of Academics. He retired from the Army in 1974 after 43 years of military service. In retirement he was an active member of the Weaverville Lions Club, the Asheville Civitan Club, The Downtown Men's Club of Asheville and the Asheville Salvation Army Advisory Council.

General Dick's wife of 57 years, Lucy, died in 1993.

Surviving him are his daughters, Nancy Dick Ferry of Weaverville and Priscilla Dick Bodde of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, John S. B. Dick II of Washington, DC; a sister, Marguerite Stevens of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Salvation Army Worship Center at 750 Haywood Road in West Asheville. Colonel Earnest A. Miller will officiate. Internment will be at the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
