Nicholas

“Let Truth Speak For Itself,” by Charles P. Nicholas and Elvin R. Heiberg, ASSEMBLY, vol. 38 (Dec. 1979):  18-19 and 43

Found out another interesting anecdote on COL Nicholas. In 1935 a store in Newburgh was giving away a new Ford car if you could accurately guess the number of pennies in a jar. For every 50 cents you spent you got one guess. COL Nicholas took some artillery surveying instruments to the front of the store to conduct measurements and then by using a probability distribution was able to accurately determine the number of pennies in the jar. He won the contest and would use the car to give talks on the importance of mathematics. Kind of humorous story about him.

Nicholas, Charles P., "Mathematics at West Point,"  Assembly, vol. 8, no. 4, January 1950, pp. 4-9.

Nicholas was Deputy, Bessell Head, at the time this was written. Both are pictured. Previously, "he was Deputy Assistant Director of Central Intelligence, under the National security Council, having been one of the initial organizing group assigned to Central Intelligence when established by Presidential directive." Lists 21 schools that current members of the department previously attended. 37 faculty, 33 USMA grads, 4 grads of other schools. Discussion of teaching methods. Lots of information here.
