Portraits of Mathematicians

Thomas Sully painted portraits of Jefferson, Monroe, Swift, and Jonathan Williams.

Alfred Sully, son of the painter, described how these paintings were saved in the fire of 1838.

  • Charles Davies. Portrait in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
  • Sylvanus Thayer. There is an 1831 portrait by Sully at Dartmouth. Copy at USMA. Robert W. Weir painted two portraits. See Pappas, To The Point, pp. 209-210.
