Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy 

1.    Isaac Greenwood (1702-1745). Censured in 1737 for drunkedness and dismissed on August 30, 1738.

2.    John Winthrop (1714-1779). Great-great-grandson of the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Graduated Harvard 1732. Became Hollis Professor of January 2, 1739. Under his direction students wrote senior theses on fluxions [Ackerberg-Hastings, 2000, p. 158].

3. Samuel Williams (1748-1817). Elected Hollis Professor on November 23, 1779.

4. Samuel Webber (1739-1810). Author of Mathematics, Compiled from the Best Authors (1802); it contained no calculus. Became president of Harvard in 1806. His son graduated from West Point.

5. John Farrar (1779-1853). Installed as Hollis Professor on June 11, 1807.

 

Benjamin Peirce (1809-1880). Called back to Harvard in 1831 as a tutor and a professorship was founded for him in 1833.

 

6. Joseph Lovering. Elected Hollis Professor in September 1837.
