Letter from Calhoun to Thayer, October 7, 1820, about appointing Adrain as mathematics professor at USMA. 


War Department 7th Octr 1820.

Dear Sir,

I received by this day's mail your's of the 2d Inst, containing the reply of Mr Adrain to your conversation with him at New York. As he has mistook the object of your conversation, you will write to him, and ascertain, if he would accept of the vacancy in case the President [[ James Monroe ]] should confer the appointment on him. I have written to Mr Bodetch on the Subject, and as soon as I am informed of the determination of him & Mr Adrain the appointment will be made without delay. Accept the assurance of my respect etc
