Letter to Davies in Hartford Connecticut from J. Trunbull concerning a political appointment and choice of President.
Washington
City, February 28, 1840
My
Dear Sir/
You will find enclosed the answer of Mr. Totten to my communication to
him - It is my duty to state for the information of the young gentleman that his
application must be annually reviewed to be of use to him - at least this is
stated to my gentlemen here on the practice.-
We are doing little to any useful purpose in the way of legislation in
our house and probably shall do little -
The next President is the subject matter of thought and discussion both
in and out of the house -
This morning Mr. Allen Editor of the Madisonium called upon me to state
that he had received a communication from Mr. Bevis(?) of Virginia on the
subject of President, and ? nomination
made by you and those at Harrisburg - It is to be published within a very few
days and will come out immediately in the Madisonium - I have not seen the
manuscript but Mr. B. comes out fully for Genl. Harrison and as fully against
Mr. Van Buren -
I wish you would let Mr. Eldrcose(?) know this, as it my encourage him in
his course - as it has done his fellow laborer Mr. Allen-
Yours truly
J. Turnbull
