• Graduated second in the class of 1863, just behind John R. Meigs.
• Taught mathematics as a cadet, 1861-1863. 
• Assistant Professor of Engineering, USMA, 1867-1871.
• Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, USMA, 1871-1901.

His son, Dennis Mahan Michie (Cullum #3502) who graduated USMA 1892, suggested that Army play Navy in Football and the first game was played in 1890. The younger Michie was killed in San Juan in 1898; Michie Stadium is his memorial. Presumably he is named after USMA faculty member Dennis Mahan, but that needs to be verified.
