- Assistant Professor, mathematics, 1879-1884.
- Worked to improve coast artillery and became chief of ordnance.
- Vital role in conversion of factories for ordnance production in World War
I.
- Designer and inventor of heavy guns.
- Elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
In 1961, part of the ordinance compound (building 671) was named in his honor

119].
