1878 April 2. Telegram from Gen. W. T. Sherman in DC to Schofield at WP, referring to Schofield's letter of March 30 announcing Church's death. Here is my transcription of the entire document: "The Secretary of War is just back. [I am inserting periods]. Have submitted to him your letters of March thirty first touching the successor to Mr. Church. Let the Senior Asst carry the classes along just as if he was the Professor. In due time, before the next Academic year, another Professor will be nominated. Thus far only three are suggested, Raymond, Ruffner & Bass all of whom are most worthy but I am sure the President & Secretary will give the largest measure of influence to your preference & the recommendation of the Academic Board. We all realize the absolute importance of selecting not only a man of ability but one of high moral, social & professional qualities. No hurry. W. T. Sherman. General."  Suzanne gave me this on St Patrick's Day, 2008. This fits in with letters in the Bass file that I looked at in DC a couple of weeks ago.  After folding is telegram, the summary ends with "Received at A. A. G. O. Dep't of W. P. April 3, 1878." This when West Point was a separate department of the Army.

Need to identify Charles Walker Raymond (#2047, first in class of 1865; Appointed 1st Lt, skipping 2nd; OB AR 13, DAB; Principal Asst Prof N&EP USMA August 28, 1872 to February 27, 1874 and . . . . 71-78) and Ernest Howard Ruffner (#2156, first in class of 1867; OB AR 92; promoted to second and first lieutenant on the same day, as are several other people.). They are not on my list of faculty.
