The following chronology of letters to and from Charles Davies was prepared by Professor George Rosenstein of Franklin Marshall College when he was a Visiting Professor at USMA in 1988-1989.

Chronology

 

December 27, 1813 - Appointment of Davies at a Cadet in the service of the United States.

December 11, 1815 - Davies commissioned as second Lieutenant of light artillery by brevet.

May 31, 1816 - Letter to Cpt David Phipps notifying him that he is no longer "under the watch and care of this Church"

August 30, 1816 - Appointment of Davies as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.  Report to General Swift at New York

September 30, 1816 - Letter from Parker? About Davies request to be in Corp of Engineers (transcription in computer)

November 22, 1820 - Letter from Joseph Mise to his sister - Elizabeth Mansfield at West Point

October 31, 1828 - Davies is appointed as a counsellor in the Supreme Court of New York

Note on back: "Be it remembered that on the thirty first day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight Charles Davis within named appeared in open court and then took and subscribed the oath required by law of counsellors admitted to practice in the Supreme Court.

May 1, 1823 - Appointment of Charles Davies as a Professor of Mathematics at the Military Academy at West Point (Certificate of appointment dated 1 January 1824; signed by Pres. Monroe.)

February 21, 1825 - Appointment of Thomas A. Davies as a cadet at the Military Academy

July 3, 1830 - Letter to Davies from H. Clay about the Clay's son decision to leave West Point after three years. (Needs to be transcribed)

February 6, 1834 - Letter to Davies and others from Senator H. Clay about a bill to fund U. of R.?  (Not transcribed)

February 12, 1834 - Letter from Edward Everett in Washington concerning proposed changes at West Point. (Transcribed) About the appointment of Mr. Leslie, an artist, to West Point.  Also "Raising all the professorships to the same footing."

June 22, 1835 - Letter to Davies at West Point from his sister Mrs. E. R Scovill as he is preparing to go to Boston for a wedding. (Transcription in computer)

July 26, 1835 - Letter to Davies from E. H. Courtenay of Philadelphia concerning a meeting. Also discussion of a summer vacation. (Not transcribed)

August 25, 1835 - Letter to Davies from his brother Henry from Boston concerning Henry's vacation journey. (Not transcribed)

February 28, 1840 - Letter to Davies in Hartford Connecticut from J. Trunbull concerning a political appointment and choice of President (Transcribed)

April(?) 19, 1840 - Letter to Davies? from Jos. Turnbull in Washington City about Treasury Note Bill, nomination of Harrison and other political matters (Transcribed) 

October 1, 1841 - Letter to Davies from John Tyler in Washington.  Response to letter from Davies.  Concerns Tyler's political views and the Whigs of Connecticut. (Transcribed)    

February 1. 1842 - Appointed paymaster (of West Point)

February 13, 1865 - Letter to Eunice from Emma Willard of Troy

April 17, 1866 - Letter to Hillyer to introduce Prof. Davies from U. S. Grant.  Written in Philadelphia. (Transcribed)

June 5, 1867 - Matrimonial certificate

May 1869 - Newspaper sent to Professor Charles Davies. Poem "On the Death of John F. Lane by his mother Mary Lane". Col. Lane entered West Point when 13 years of age and graduated with honor at the age of 17.  He died in Florida 1836 at the age of 26.

November 9, 1874 - Letter to Davies from Robert E. Coxe, President of the Home Protection of North Alabama thanking Davies for sending Davies' address. Tells about the election  in Alabama. (Not Transcribed) 

May 1, 1875 - Letter from former student, Henry Wayne (USMA 1838).  Transcribed.

May 27, 1875 - Letter to Davies from J. E. Johnston responding to a letter from Davies about the Address to the Graduates.  Written in Savannah. Transcribed.

February 26, 1876 - Letter to Davies from General W. L. Sherman concerning an annual address given by Sherman using Davies' books. (Transcribed)
